On April 23, 2013, François Castonguay, President and CEO of Uniprix Group, unveiled a new $700,000 partnership among Uniprix Group, Université Laval and Université de Montréal. The goal of the partnership is to create a joint Pharm. D. “gateway” program (PPD) that builds on Canada’s first two recently implemented doctoral undergraduate programs in pharmacy (4-year Pharm. D.). This is in keeping with the recent changes in Quebec’s legislation expanding the role of pharmacists in our healthcare system. The Pharm. D program, first launched in fall 2007 at Université de Montréal and subsequently at Université Laval in fall 2011, focuses on developing the professional and clinical skills of pharmacy students to prepare them for the new realities of pharmacy practice. Pharmacy students who complete all the components of the PPD program will hold the title of doctor in pharmacy. The program will begin in January 2014. The partnership was made possible through the support of one of Quebec’s most prominent and respected healthcare companies, Apotex.
