Associated Tests: | This test is usually part of a lipid profile. Total cholesterol , HDL and LDL levels are also measured. Triglyceride levels on their own are seldom used to make a diagnosis. Other test results are taken into consideration and evaluated along with the triglyceride results. |
General Information
Triglycerides are fat deposits that are stored in the body. The function of triglycerides is to provide the body with energy. However, an elevated triglyceride level increases one's risk for cardiovascular disease.
There are two sources of triglycerides: they are either obtained through food or produced by the liver.
What does an abnormal test result mean?
If the result is too high
High triglyceride levels, also known as hypertriglyceridemia, may be indicative of a problem with blood lipid levels. This condition can be hereditary. High triglyceride levels are considered a risk factor for heart disease and very high levels are associated with pancreatitis.
Factors that may be responsible for increasing triglycerides in the blood:

|
If the result is too low
Low triglyceride levels are associated with hyperthyroidism.
Factors that can interfere with test accuracy
Failure to comply with test preparation, receiving intravenous lipid infusions and pregnancy or recent delivery can alter lipid profile results.
What you need to know before the test
Before going for blood tests, a procedure or other exam, it is best to always bring a list of all the drugs you take (prescription, OTC and natural health products). Unless told otherwise, you should take your medication as usual on the day of the test. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist for more information.
