Mononucleosis : The kissing disease
Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpes family. It is also known as “glandular fever” because it leads to swelling of the lymph glands. Mononucleosis mainly strikes teens and young adults and lasts one to three weeks, though the fatigue may at times continue longer. The virus remains infectious in the saliva for several months and is therefore easily spread through kissing.Symptoms
The most common symptoms are:- swollen glands on the sides and in the backmof the neck, under the arms and above the groin;
- headaches;
- high fever;
- extreme fatigue;
- sore throat.
How to get back on feet?
While most cases of mononucleosis are benign, those affected must remain in bed for several days, drink plenty of water or fruit juice to avoid dehydration, gargle with salt water many times a day, eat cool foods to soothe the throat. Acetaminophen can also be taken to reduce the fever.
Complications
The most common complication of this disease is rupture of the spleen. Painless at times, it can nevertheless lead to low blood pressure and shock. In such cases, emergency surgery is required. While the risk is extremely low, it should not be ignored. To prevent this complication, avoid sports and heavy lifting for at least two months.
