Back pain: No one is immune

Whether chronic or occasional, back pain is very common in industrialized countries. In fact, according to the Arthritis Society, some 20 million Canadians will suffer from back pain at some point in their life. Let’s take a few minutes to better understand this widespread ailment.

Parts of the back

The spinal column is a complex structure made up of bones connected to muscles, ligaments and tendons. Together, these form the back. Spanning from the shoulders to the kidneys, this part of our body supports a significant portion of our weight. Fragile, yet strong, it is involved in almost every movement we perform, making it more susceptible to injury.

Causes of back pain

Most cases of back pain are not related to a disease, but rather to aging, wear and tear or poor posture. Many factors can also increase the risk:

  • Lack of exercise or overtraining;
  • Obesity;
  • Pregnancy;
  • High-heel shoes;
  • Stress.

However, some cases of back pain may be caused by:

  • Skeletal problems (i.e. lordosis, scoliosis);
  • Osteoarthritis;
  • Osteoporosis;
  • A sprain or pulled muscle;
  • Degeneration or herniated disk;
  • A fracture.

To determine the cause of your pain, you must see a doctor. He will ask you a series of questions regarding your health and send you for additional exams, if needed.

Possible treatment options

There are several ways to temporarily relieve a backache. Depending on the root of your pain, you may want to apply heat to relax the muscles or cold to numb the pain and reduce swelling.

There are also over-the-counter medications (pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs or muscle relaxants) in a variety of formats (capsules, tablets, self-adhesive pads) to soothe the pain. Before using a specific product, however, always talk to your pharmacist.

People who suffer from chronic back pain might also consider alternative treatment methods (physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractics or osteopathy). If you are thinking about any of these therapy options, consult the relevant professional order or association to find a trustworthy practitioner.

Preventative measures

Back pain can be prevented. Here’s how:

  • Reach and/or maintain a healthy weight;
  • Exercise regularly;
  • Alternate between light duties and heavy or repetitive tasks;
  • Take regular breaks;
  • Be aware of your posture and stand up straight at all times;
  • Always bend at the knees when lifting heavy objects;
  • Avoid twisting your back;
  • Sleep on your back or side;
  • Do not remain in the same position for extended periods;
  • Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes, with heels no higher than 5 cm;
  • Carry your belongings in a backpack rather than in a purse.
