Choosing pain medication
Tylenol, Advil, Aspirin? All pain relievers can be useful depending on the type of pain involved and its location. Read the table below to gain a better understanding of their differences.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
Effect : fever reducer, pain reliever.
Possible adverse effects : very rare. Generally well tolerated.
Contraindications : Severe liver or kidney diseases.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
Effect : fever reducer, anti-inflammatory (ask what dosage is right for your problem), pain reliever. Effective for menstrual pain.
Possible adverse effects : risk of stomach irritation.
Contraindications : asthma; stomach problems.
Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin)
Effect : fever reducer, anti-inflammatory, pain reliever. Should preferably be taken under a doctor’s advice (as a blood thinner).
Possible adverse effects : irritating for the stomach.
Contraindications : children 18 years of age and under (linked to Reye’s syndrome), hypertension, stomach problems.
