Traveller’s diarrhea

Some 20 to 50 percent of travellers to Latin America will experience traveller’s diarrhea. If you plan on visiting a sunny destination soon, here are a few ways to prevent or treat this problem.

Vaccination

Dukoral® is an oral vaccine that requires 2 doses from one to six weeks apart. It comes in a powder that must be dissolved in water and drunk immediately. The dose is based on a person’s age and weight. The second dose must be administered at least 1 week before departure and protection lasts 3 months. Ask your pharmacist whether this vaccine is right for you.

Prescription medications

Certain antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and azithromycin, can be prescribed to treat traveler’s diarrhea. These drugs can be a suitable option for certain travellers. But those taking them must be sure to carefully follow the advice of their doctor or pharmacist. It is recommended that people visiting Africa, Asia or the Middle East, among other destinations, have these drugs in their luggage when they travel.

Over-the-counter medications

Over-the-counter medications, such as Imodium®, can help relieve diarrhea by slowing down movement in your intestines. Be sure to also pack a rehydration formula like Gastrolyte® in your travel kit.
