Frequently asked questions

Image files (Photo)

How many characters can I use to name an image file?

Image filenames must not exceed 150 characters.

What print sizes are used for specialty products available at the Photo Boutique?

Here is a list of the print sizes used for each product available at our Photo Boutique:

T-shirts: 8" x 10"
Mugs: 3.2" x 3.2"
Mouse pads: 8"x 10"
Calendars: 11" x 8.5"
Photo books: 8.5" x 11"

What is the minimal resolution required to order prints?

The resolution, which is measured in pixels, is the total quantity of digitized data stored on your photo. A lower resolution translates into a lower level of detail clarity.

Each format has its own minimal resolution required to order prints. Our software application determines the resolution of your print, then compares it to the minimal resolution required you have selected.

Our application tags pictures of insufficient resolution with “!” or “X.” “!” indicates that you may still print a picture but that it will likely be of poor quality. “X” means that the resolution is too low to be suitable for printing.

What is the minimal resolution required to order prints from the Photo Boutique?

The minimal resolution required depends on the product you wish to order. Here is a list of the various products available at the Photo Boutique and the minimal resolution recommended for optimal results:

T-shirts: 800 pixels x 1000 pixels
Mugs: 320 pixels x 320 pixels
Mouse pads: 800 pixels x 1000 pixels
Calendars: 1100 pixels x 850 pixels
Photo books: 1200 pixels x 1560 pixels

What types of image files can be used to print photos online?

We suggest you upload files with a JPG or JPEG extension. You can also use BMP, TIF and TIFF files, but, due to their weight, these files will slow down the uploading process. We do not print from GIFs as these would give poor quality prints.

What print size options are available?

We offer many print sizes. The most popular are:

VIP 4½" x 6"
Regular 4" x 6"
Other options include:

5" x 7"
8" x 10"
12" x 16"
Most panoramic versions can be printed on paper widths that include:

4" x 7" to 17¾"
4½" x 8" to 17¾"
5"x 9" to 17¾"
8" x 14" to 17¾"
The resolution of your digital camera determines the maximum printable format:

Size 4½" x 6¾" is best for 640 x 480 pixels or 1024 x 768 pixels;
Size 5" x 7" is best for 1280 x 960 pixels or 1280 x 1024 pixels.
If your camera features resolutions equal to or greater than 1800 x 1200 pixels, you may order 8" x 10" prints without compromising quality.

Modifying prints (Photo)

How can I control the framing of my images?

You may proceed with different size and reframing trials to obtain the picture you like best. Please note that the system accepts reframing of an image only if the resolution is sufficient for the print format selected. For a tighter reframing, select a smaller print size.

What types of modifications can I make on my pictures with your Service?

Print editing options vary based on the type of product you wish to order.

Prints and photo books:
You can reframe your images and change their orientation (portrait or landscape). You can also select part of the picture by zooming in or out. Also, you can remove red eyes.

Other products from the Photo Boutique:
You can reframe your images and change their orientation.

Our software application does not include luminosity or contrast correction, because our laboratory can perform these alterations automatically and effectively. If you still wish to retouch your pictures, there are several specialized software tools that can provide the control you want (e.g. Adobe Photoshop). However, you should know that certain alterations may affect the end quality of the print.

Miscellaneous (Photo)

Does uploading a print take a long time?

It is difficult to evaluate the time required to upload a series of image files. It depends on several factors like the speed of your modem, size of the files and amount of Web traffic during the upload process. Be sure not to close your browser window before the uploading has been completed, since doing so means you will need to begin your order again. If you are concerned about losing your connection, it is best to send several small orders, rather than one larger one.

How many photos can I request in a single order?

There is no established limit as to the number of images files requested in a single order. Of course, the larger the order, the longer the upload process. What’s more, you can order as many as 9999 prints of the same image without any impact on the upload time.

Do I need a digital camera to use the online photo service?

When you visit the Uniprix photo centre with your conventional 35mm camera, you can have your images transferred to a CD-ROM. Whenever you need more copies, you can select the required pictures from this CD-ROM and order them through the Uniprix photo centre. You can also scan your photos, save them and order additional copies or enlargements through our photo centre service.

Once I have placed my order from my computer, how long does it take before I can pick up my prints at the Uniprix store I have selected?

Except for a few statutory holidays when store business hours may vary or barring circumstances beyond our control with the Internet connection, orders are normally ready and shipped to the selected Uniprix store within 48 hours or so after an order is placed (during business hours). Certain products from the Photo Boutique may also lead to a longer wait time.

The expected date of delivery in store for each envelope is indicated on the page following your order confirmation. While this date is not guaranteed, it will be respected in most cases. It is best to call the store before picking up your order.

My computer (Photo)

Where on my computer do I find the image files to be uploaded?

To upload image files from a folder on your computer, use the search menu on the left panel to navigate among folders. Only image files featuring a format supported for printing will be displayed in the right panel. Simply use the “Browse” key to navigate among your files.

Do I need special software to upload my photos?

We provide the necessary software. It is automatically downloaded on your computer when you begin your first order through our Website. You do not need to download the software with every new order. The application lets you choose your photos and upload them to our laboratory.

Expired medications

I used an expired medication. Is that dangerous?

The expiry date is written on a medication by its manufacturer to guarantee its efficacy and safety. If you have used an expired medication, talk to your pharmacist. He can tell you about possible consequences and steps to take.

What does the pharmacist do with the expired medications we return to the pharmacy?

The pharmacist collects expired medications to make sure they are safely destroyed. He then hands them over to a specialized company, which disposes of them in a safe, environmentally friendly manner.

Are pharmacists required to make sure all drugs sold in pharmacies are fit for consumption (e.g. that they are not expired)?

Despite their specialized, complex nature, medications are consumer products and, as such, they too have an expiry date. At Uniprix-affiliated pharmacies, our priority is to offer you quality pharmaceuticals that are safe and effective. That’s why we have established a rigorous protocol on the management of expired medications. The goal of the protocol is to ensure that all pharmaceuticals – both over-the-counter and prescriptions drugs – are sold during their useful life. If you have questions about our expired medications management protocol, please write to us at service_clientele@uniprix.com. We will be more than happy to respond to your information request in a timely manner.

Generic drugs

Will my pharmacist automatically give me a generic drug if it is available on the market?

Normally, if the generic medication exists, the pharmacist will offer
it to you. However, the patient has the final say in the matter. Certain
medications do not yet have a generic equivalent, since the company
that formulated them still holds exclusive patent rights over it for a
certain period of time.

Are generic drugs as effective as recognized brand-name medications?

Prescription and over-the-counter generic drugs (e.g. Option+ products) are just as effective as recognized brand-name medications. The pharmaceutical companies that manufacture generic drugs must undergo rigorous testing to prove that their generic product is equal to the original. Generic medications contain the same active ingredients. The efficacy and unwanted side effects are therefore similar to those of the original medication. Their appearance is generally similar as well, but may vary at times. There is often a difference in price between generic drugs and the original medications. Generic products are generally cheaper because the companies that manufacture them did not invest in the research and development of the original molecule. If you want to learn more about this topic, talk to your pharmacist. He’s there to help!

Preparing prescritions

What influences the dosage of my medication?

Many factors can influence the prescribed dose of a medication. Each person has unique traits that can have an impact on the dose prescribed. Here are a few examples: Age Kidney function Weight and height Other medications you are on State of health Certain lifestyle habits (smoking, alcohol intake, diet).   What information should I give the pharmacist when I present my prescription at the counter?

You must always make sure your patient file is up to date. If you have developed new allergies or are taking new medications, be sure to tell your pharmacist. If it’s your first visit to the branch, the pharmacist will ask you a series of questions required to set up your file. The information he gathers will help him to adequately analyze your profile in order to advise you even better. He will also ask you about other prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins and natural products you are taking, your medical history, lifestyle and allergies. He may also ask you questions about other issues related to your treatment

My prescription record is at a rival pharmacy; how can I transfer it to the nearest Uniprix-affiliated pharmacy?

You should be able to transfer your file from one pharmacy to another without any restrictions, since you have control over it. At your request, your Uniprix-affiliated pharmacist will take care of obtaining your file from another establishment. It is better to bring all of your prescriptions to the same pharmacist, however, as this makes it easier to analyze your file. If you have any questions, talk to your pharmacist!

Does smoking influence the dosage and choice of a medication?

Smoking can, in fact, affect the efficacy of certain medications. The dosage can be increased or decreased to ensure their effectiveness. That’s why it’s important to let your pharmacist know if your smoking habits change (if you increase or decrease your intake or if you quit).

Why must certain medications be taken before a meal and others with food?

Some medications are difficult to digest; taking them with food serves to protect the stomach. In addition, other medications are better absorbed by the body when food is present. You need to be especially careful, however, since some foods must be avoided when taking certain medications in order to avoid affecting the way they are absorbed by the body. Other medications must be taken on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal), since that is how the active ingredient is best absorbed by the body, ensuring an optimal treatment. Every case is unique, however. If you have any questions about your medications, ask your pharmacist.

Is it really that important to follow the dosage regimen established by the pharmacist?

Does smoking influence the dosage and choice of a medication?

A pharmacist is a health professional, and as such, he must conduct a comprehensive analysis of your file to ensure that the treatment prescribed is the best for you and for the medical issues affecting you. For example, he will check whether you have any allergies and if the efficacy of your medication may be influenced by other medications you are taking or by your lifestyle. He may also need to contact the physician who prescribed the medication(s) to verify certain details of your treatment. In other cases, he will need to perform calculations to validate the prescribed doses. When renewing your prescriptions, the pharmacist must be just as thorough in verifying the medications he is giving you.

Drug Prices

Why does the price of a drug vary from one pharmacy to another? (And can consumers obtain information on how drug prices are set?)

Drug pricing is an issue that raises many questions among customers – and rightly so. The different drug plans that exist in Quebec (private and public) and the various conditions that apply in each case, combined with the competitive nature of the free market, means that drug prices can vary from one pharmacy to another or even from one month to the next. To ensure that our commitment to transparency helps you choose the pharmacy that is right for you, we will gladly answer any questions you may have on drug prices. If our staff members are unable to give you this information immediately – either because it requires research on our part or because time does not permit due to other duties under way behind the counter – we will be sure to contact you as soon as possible. Keep in mind that it is always better to purchase all your medications at the same pharmacy. That way, the pharmacist can gain an overall picture of your drug profile and intervene if problems arise. If you have any questions, feel free to ask the pharmacist-owner.
