Skin care for mature skin: Cosmetology to the rescue!
Skin type, genetic heritage and lifestyle (food/alcohol/tobacco intake, physical activity) all impact the aging of the skin which is an unavoidable fact of life. It is therefore important to adopt healthy lifestyle practices, pamper your skin as required, and accept the transformation of your body with age as calmly and serenely as possible!
Around the age of fifty, hormonal changes associated with menopause cause the metabolism of the skin to slow which leads to one or more of the following:
- Dehydration and drying
- Loss of tone, softening of facial features
- Loss of elasticity
- Increase in number of wrinkles
- Increase in number of age spots
As you will discover for yourself, aging skin is not just about wrinkles! Mature skin care products must therefore be formulated to address a diversity of skin conditions and concerns. Currently marketed mature skin care products are generally the result of leading-edge advances in cosmetology, are as diversified as they are specialized, and extend well beyond anti-wrinkle formulations.
Anti-wrinkle molecules
Various anti-aging agents and molecules found in skin creams and serums are specifically intended for mature skin care. They include as follows:
- Anti-free radicals (antioxidants): vitamins A (famed ‘retinol’), C and E ; trace elements and minerals (notably selenium)
- Soy isoflavones (stimulate the production of collagen and help restructure/plump the skin weakened by the stoppage of oestrogen production during menopause)
- Coenzyme Q10 (another antioxidant)
- Exfoliants agents (smooth the skin and reduce the appearance of age spots)
- Procysteins (reduce the appearance of age spots)
- And others...
Note that the appearance of age spots can be diminished by means of exfoliating scrubs, laser treatments and microdermabrasion.
