After-sun care: Extra moisture is your best bet
Nothing beats the great outdoors! A boat ride, lunch on the patio or a biking expedition – during summertime the possibilities are endless. And when it’s time to go back inside, a good after-sun routine can help prolong that sun-kissed glow. The pampering doesn’t hurt either!
What doctors recommend
Sunbathing is never a good idea. Even if your skin is not sunburnt, the tan alone means your skin has been damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet rays, putting you at greater risk for cancer. Your best allies: sunscreen, protective clothing and a hat with a wide brim.
Misjudged the strength of the sun?
A tan
As you know, tanned skin is injured skin. The harm has been done? Perhaps, but after-sun products are especially formulated to thoroughly moisturize skin after exposure to the sun. They help to prevent dry skin and irritation. Rich in active ingredients, they also soothe the burning sensation. Some of them even prepare skin in case of future UV damage.
A sunburn
There are no quick fixes for sunburns. As is the case with all burns, healing takes time. Symptoms can be eased with aspirin, baths and cold compresses. Moisturizing creams and lotions can temporarily alleviate the pain. Be sure to avoid using soap on the affected areas though, since it can cause irritation.
