The smokey eye look in 7 easy steps!

The smokey eye look in 7 easy steps!

Popular in fall and winter, the smokey eye look is super hot in the summer, as well. And it’s much easier to create than you might think. For a sophisticated, head-turning gaze, simply follow these seven easy steps!

Here is a list of the cosmetics you’ll need to produce the classic smokey eye look:

  • Black eyeliner
  • Eye shadow quartet in complementary hues, from black to light grey (we’ll be using three shades: light, medium and dark)
  • Lengthening mascara in black
  • Angled eyeshadow brush
  • Sponge applicator brush
  • Eye sculpting brush

Step 1

Apply black liner over the entire lid up to, but not into, the crease. The greasy texture of the pencil will increase the hold of the eye shadow and create intense, long-lasting results.

Step 2

Using the sponge applicator brush, apply the darker shadow (the black) over the black eye liner on the entire surface of the eyelid, once again, stopping at the crease.

Step 3

Still with the applicator brush, apply the quartet’s lighter eye shadow under the eyebrow down to the crease of your eyelid.
Use a generous amount of shadow over the lower portion of the eyebrow to highlight your eyes.

Step 4

Using the sculpting brush, follow with the medium shadow of the quartet, on the crease of the eyelid, moving from left to right. The goal is to blend the three shades together to create a smooth transition from one shade to the next, with no visible lines between the lighter shade and the black. You may have to repeat this step more than once to achieve the desired results.

Step 5

To round out your smokey eye, using the eye pencil, apply a thin line at the base of the lower lashes. With the angled brush, smudge a small amount of black shadow over this line. Then, still with the angled brush, lightly sweep from left to right to get that sultry effect.

Step 6

Line the inside of the lower lid. It’s this little detail that gives the look the smokey effect you’re seeking.

Step 7

Finish with a generous application of lengthening mascara on the upper lashes.

For an extra boost of glamour, we recommend combining the smokey eye look with natural lips by using a clear lip gloss.

With a bit of practice, you’ll have red-carpet appeal in a flash! Remember that once you master the technique, you can play around with a variety of shades. Try it in green, brown,  blue or plum!
